“Why Run?” ~ by Lisa J. of Words on Tap Writing
There have been many times in conversation when I tell someone that I’m a runner, and in response I receive a distorted look of wonder, and a very blunt, “Why?” In that moment, my immediate retort is, “Why Not?” but then I realize that unless you are a runner, this question is actually logical. So to clarify, here’s a little list, in no particular order, to help answer the question, Why Run?
1. Physical Health – While some may believe this is the obvious choice, some also argue, running is hard on your body. This can be true, but just like every other physical activity, proper gear, proper training and proper shoes allows for peak physical benefits, including endurance, cardiovascular health, calorie burn and strength building.
2. Easy set up – It is as convenient as strapping on your shoes and heading out the door. No equipment needed, just your will to go.
3. Inside or Out – There is nothing like the breeze in your face, the smell of fresh cut grass, or the warmth of the sun on your “exercise” routine. However, even in a blizzard, below zero temps or humidity that will suffocate you (we are in NWI), you can take your run inside on the treadmill. [Disclaimer, some refer to this machine as the dreadmill, but it truly is a convenient alternative].
4. Mental health – This has never been more true than in the last few months. Sometimes a good sweat, peace and quiet of the evening, or some really good tunes, can relieve the stress of the day, reset the mood or change a mindset.
5. Fun running clothes – I will not deny that I have more cute “run” clothes than I have cute “out” clothes. They are comfortable, colorful and can be worn anytime. [Warning: this can become an addiction, lol].
6. Go Alone, With a Group or With Your Dog – There are no rules as to who’s allowed! Go alone, bring a friend or bring your furry bestie. There is no question that each day your need may be different, but it sure is awesome to have a choice as to who you bring along on your journey!
7. Races Including Destination/Themed Races – Races! So. Much. Fun. The adrenaline, the people, the outfits, the swag, the goodies and the…eh hem, beer at the end.
8. Medals/shirts – Ask any runner why they sign up for races and besides the sense of accomplishment, they will tell you one of two things, the shirt or the medal. I, myself am a medal girl, but I have a drawer full of awesome shirts with memories attached to each and every one.
9. Confidence – You can call it bragging rights, you can call it posting too much on social media, you can call it whatever you want, but the truth is, that when you believe you can walk a mile, then run one, and then run more than a mile, that accomplishment, no matter the time or distance, builds a confidence in you that pours out in all facets of your life.
10. The People – There is no Tribe like a running Tribe. The friendships are rooted in sweat, miles, laughter, finish lines, stories and life events. The support is incomparable and the loyalty and accountability, is beyond explainable. It’s hard to find another that will run in a downpour, through injury, winds that blow you over and even when they don’t think they can make it. I am overwhelmingly grateful for my tribe!
So, Why Run? These are the reasons that drive me, reasons that rotate on the scale of importance depending on the day, and everyone that has tied a pair of shoes and took off down the road with a goal in mind has their own. What are yours?
