Today’s Runner Profile features John Dvorscak. While you may not know them by name, you have seen John & his wife Nicole at many of our events. We greatly appreciate their support. John is in our Hometown Happenings Heroes club & has completed 6 events in 2019 alone! Here is his story:
Why did you start running?
In 2017, I accepted an out of town assignment for work in Seattle Washington and the cost of living is very expensive in the city. When I wasn’t at work I didn’t want to spend too much money so I decided to join a gym. A couple months later I read about a 5K that ran through the city where the World’s Fair was in 1962 and I trained so that I could attempt to finish the race without stopping. I actually finished in 28:28.
In addition to the previous questions, I also run for my daughter, Hallie. Hallie was born with CHD and has gone thru so many challenges so far in life. I run to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in her name and she is my motivation for finishing every race at my best time.
What is your favorite Hometown Happenings event?
I actually have two favorites. Beast Boot Camp 5K and the Hub City Half Marathon. The Beast Boot Camp 5K I chose to do it competitively and it was physically exhausting but I had a great time. The Hub City Half Marathon is a nice out and back and was my fastest half marathon time.
What goal do you still want to accomplish?
I eventually want to compete in a full marathon and run it in its entirety without stopping.
What are your interests/ activities outside of running?
Nicole and I enjoy competing in Virtual Challenges by walking, running, or cycling. I enjoy playing baseball or going to live baseball games. I also enjoy spending as much time as possible with family since I tend to get sent out of town often for work and family time is precious.
Your best advice for someone getting started?
Build up to your distance. The times will come. Do not quit and enjoy the ride!
