Brooke Nack has completed several Beast Boot Camp 5Ks and will be teaching our Beast Boot Camp 5K Workout Training on Thursdays at 6 pm. The cost to attend is $10 each week. This week’s workouts will be meeting at the Ye Olde Yoga Barn, a studio behind the 2-story house at 400 W. Goldsborough in Crown Point (the north west corner of the intersection of Hoffman & Goldsborough). But, before class starts, let’s meet our instructor, Brooke Nack:
Q: How did you get interested in fitness?
A: My husband Les & I gained a bit of weight in the early part of our marriage. We were non selective with our eating choices and we took long weekend naps. Then, my husband really was the one to suggest a lifestyle change. I reflected on times back in junior high when I was supposed to run an 8 minute mile for Presidential Fitness. I figured, “I am an adult now, so I guess I should run an 8 minute mile for 2 miles!” I eventually got there and beyond, and I’ve never looked back.
Q: What is your experience with coaching fitness & with the Beast Boot Camp 5K?
A: I was a backup instructor for Bootcamp at the Southlake YMCA for a number of years. I have done the Beast probably 6 or 7 times. One of my absolute favorite memories is running it with my whole family. Many years we didn’t stick together, but knowing that my two kids (under 10 at the time) were gutting it out behind me just warms my heart.
Q: Share an interesting fact about you or an accomplishment?
A: My family and I enjoy a good challenge together. Les & I have conquered the best hiking trails in Hawaii. We also hiked the Colorado Rockies (4 miles uphill & 4 miles back downhill in high altitude) up to a beautiful place called Sky Pond with the kids. Last summer, Les & I sea kayaked and biked in an island hopping fashion off the coast of Japan. The dear Lord has created an amazing world, and I enjoy finding ways to climb, bike, run or row to explore (okay, maybe conquer) it! My kids are also pushing me to train for a full Iron Man. It might be a few years for that one!
Q: What is your best advice for someone to get started?
A: My best advice is to just start. Simple as that. When I am getting tired, I tell myself, “Pick ‘em up and put ‘em down” referring to my feet. Doesn’t matter how fast they go as long as they keep going. And listen to the movement. I love the sound of feet hitting the pavement and of patterned breathing. It’s a beautiful rhythm of like that I enjoy being a part of.
