FINDING THE “WRITE” WORDS WITH WORDS ON TAP ~ by Lisa J. of Words on Tap
Writing for Hometown Happenings has been an amazing experience. I get an opportunity to meet wildly inspiring people and share their incredible stories of triumph or inspiration and love that will fill your heart. So, I find it ironic as I sit here attempting to find the words for my own story, the one that led to me to start Words on Tap, and I’m somewhat at a loss. How is it that I articulate my journey? How is it that I shock and awe you with the details of my exciting story? Well, simply, I don’t.
While I can recite some uniquely interesting chapters of my life, some you may not even believe, my life is really no different than any other person reading this now. Honestly, that is exactly why I do what I do. I tell the stories of you, the stories that don’t make headlines, but matter so much more than you may ever know. The stories that need to be told so others know they are not alone, and to prove that most times the most ordinary stories make the best stories.
The walk down my writing path began when I was young as a hobby with quotes, fairy tales, and essays. I didn’t wake up one day from a dream and realize I wanted to write, nor did I ever think any writing I did would be on a platform for others to read. It was evolving through time, sometimes good moments, sometimes bad, but every word inspired by a piece of me, a page in my book. The younger version of me wrote about the world around her in tunnel vision, however as my life shifted, and I began to open my eyes to those around me, I found that writing about goodness and inspiration allowed my writing to come from a different place. This place involved more heart and soul, and the more I wrote the more I couldn’t stop.
It was a collision of my life and my passion. For so long I felt I had no voice, and when I found it through words, I felt free. This has now become my mission, to help those who don’t have the voice to express what’s in their heart, to give words to a passion that can be difficult to explain, or breathe life into an idea that started as a dream, and there’s nothing I love doing more. I began by writing a speech for a wedding, and a mission statement for friend’s business, all because they had the emotion and the drive, but couldn’t find the words. Next, I wrote about shelter dogs and their personalities and love they shared. My next step was blogging about my journey, and then for Hometown, and all the while tapping into the emotional, real and human side of each article, essay, speech or biography.
I do this because I have found, that’s where the true stories are, deep in the heart of those around us. Each business owner has a why, a reason it began, each runner has a motive behind what got them to tie their shoes the first time, each person we encounter, every day of every week, has a story, and it is my calling to tell it. These stories are my Why, and the core of Words on Tap.
