In 1934, notorious bank robber John Dillinger escaped from the Crown Point Jail using a wooden gun. He would become our nation’s first “Public Enemy #1” and Johnny Depp would portray him in the 2008 feature film, “Public Enemies”. The Hometown Happenings Public Enemy 5K Run/1 Mile Walk uses this history as the theme for their upcoming 2nd Annual Public Enemy 5K Run/2K Walk. The event will take place on Sunday, June 29th at 9:00 am at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, IN.
Walk among the vintage Ford Model A cars and you will feel like you stepped back in to the 1930’s. Add to the theme yourself by coming dressed as a flapper, gangster or police officer. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Hold a Tommy gun that was used by John Dillinger in several bank robberies after his escape. There will also be a display from the South Shore Convention & Visitor Authority’s John Dillinger Museum.
This event also honors local police. The Lake County Sheriff will be landing a police helicopter at the event. The Crown Point K-9 Unit will be giving demonstrations during the event. The Northwest Indiana SWAT team will be bringing out their armored vehicle and displaying weapons and tactical equipment used by their officers.
Local police charities will share in the proceeds from the event. Among the charities expected to benefit are the Crown Point K-9 Unit, Lake County Animal Shelter, and the Porter County K-9 Unit.
This is a chip-timed race with unique awards for Top Overall, Top Masters and Top 3 Finishers in each age group. Cost through June 26th is $18 for adults and $12 for kids (ages 12 & under). Shirts are available for an additional $10. Event day registration is $25 for all ages. There is a $2 discount for Gold Cup members.
